i'm an avid fan of the society for news design and always happy to contribute to their

cause. for the vegas conference i spoke on managing creative demons and (demonic

creatives.)  in new york it was graphics web to print. in denver, how to stay fresh on

a story. and during the judging in syracuse in 2010...my shortlist of gripes. ideas are

free, presentations are fun, inspiration is circular.  with so many communities rising

up around visualization, i feel fortunate to collaborate with the growing ranks of

hacks and hackers. here, some interviews with cartographers for urban ombnibus.

and then there's academia: nothing like guest-teaching to wake you up. i've lectured in

nick bilton's and rachel abrams' classes at nyu's itp program, at sva for john

grimwade, helped out columbia's j school. and once upon a time, i held annual classes

for little girls during 'take your daughters to work day' (back when it was about girl-

power)  my father taught graphic design at the u of i, chicago. it's the dna.

then one day i got to be in geoff mcghee's documentary on journalism in the age of

data. so fun to be on the record with a visual pun..."transparency is the new black."
